HMV, High Street, Birmingham Instore Performance + Signing Session Jan. 14th 2005 Ok Ok.. So I didnt quite pull off my promise of rugby tackling Will to the ground :( Wont get my ugly mug in Q magazine after all, curses.. but I DID get the perfect thirteen senses experience.. I skived work ( achoo, boss.. ) and made for the train.. Not been to brummieland for ages so I set off early.. 5hours early, just to be safe. Found the store with about 3hours to kill grrr so ensconsed myself in the internet cafe outside to kill time. Saw the roadies set the scene, soundcheck etc. I was pretty much the first to arrive, so with 45mins to kill found myself right at the front of the stage. Had to indulge the well-scarey security bouncer types baaad irish gags, and had paparazzi guy regale me with stories of kate moss' 30th bday party...jammy swine. Quite a heavin throng of peeps arrived for the performance..ranging from the expected gigglin schoolygirl hoard (the general conscensus is that Tom's the best lookin) to grannies. The band sure attracted a broad spectrum of eager pop pickers. Pre gig highlight was the doofus who slipped and sent the cd album display flying..i ve never seen anyone as red faced in my life, not since I made the lurpak suggestion to maureen..long story. The scariest bouncer approached him, fixed him with DO NOT MESS psycho scare, then hugged him with big grin on his face, at which point the petrified youngster almost fainted with relief. Paparazzi announced that the cd shelf that got wrecked belonged to the killers, at which point everyone cheered. And then the band arrived. PERFECT performance..bit weird in broad daylight, surrounded by Celine and Mariah albums etc, but seven songs worth of pure bliss. 'Do No Wrong' was highlight for me, along with storming set closer 'Thru The Glass', played 48574times on repeat b4 the show and STILL as catchy. Then on to the signing session, conversing with indie mad brummies while I endured the loong queue. 7inch vinyl and cd the invitation nicely scribbled all over, the guys were more than happy to chinwag and answer questions..the singles mid week chart pos was no 10, but had since slipped to 15 apparently..curses. And then I was away into the night, 13 sensed up to hi heaven...of course, got smartly brought to earth with 3hour train journey back to yorkieland. But WELL worth the day out :) cuz I met da band. and you havent :P hehe I'm offskies now to TRY and post pix for u guys..wish me luck, for I be technophobe no brainer... This your rovin reporter signin off. Keep it bright, pop kids :) [The Gonz]
